How the heck do I ‘get out of my own way’?
When I first start working with actors, they usually tell me, “I know how to act, cuz I've taken so many acting classes... Now I just need to let the magic happen... I need to get out of my own way."
Have you ever been told this by an acting teacher or a mentor?
It sounds wise, and maybe even doable, if only you knew what it means...
My take on it: It's a generic line, guys, and people have a tendency to just throw it out there without any explanation.
So, I hosted a LIVE training session and Q&A to give us a chance to discuss it and define it once and for all, together. The video is normally just for members of my private online community, The Instinctive Actors' Society, but today, I’m sharing it with you.
When actors try to get out of their own way, they either try to relax reeeeally hard or they'll try to build on their confidence sky high. Two totally natural reactions, but they don't really work, do they?
If these plans of attack sound like you, or even partly true for you, then you are going to love this free training!
Here are a few highlights we covered:
“Get out of your own way” doesn't mean that you should let go of all those sticky feeling you get around acting, but so many actors think that. They try to just delete it all from their bodies and minds. I say it's THE OPPOSITE of what you should do.
All of your feelings around your character and the circumstances of your audition/performance are actually your ONLY way to be present, to be alive, and to be undeniable.
So what do you move out of your way instead? Your desire for control and a certain result… How you think the scene should go. That's the way to be free: cultivating what YOU feel, YOUR uniqueness and what you have to offer.
And I'll even give you tips on how to do that! So check out the video below.
Because there is only so much depth we can get into here today, I strongly encourage you to watch The Instictive Actor webinar if you haven’t already, so you can access my free tools to help you move from being a good actor to a GREAT actor.
