Facing Fear as an Artist: Why Repressing It Holds You Back

If you’re an actor, performer, or creative of any kind, chances are you’ve felt fear—sometimes overwhelming fear—right before a self-tape, an audition, a live performance, or even while just reading new sides. And if you're like most of us, you've probably tried to get rid of that fear. You’ve read books, taken classes, watched other actors on Instagram, followed advice from coaches, all in the hope of “fixing” the fear so you could finally feel legitimate, confident, or fearless.
But what if the fear isn't a problem to fix?
When you watch my training below you will discover that, I talk about fear not as an obstacle, but as a vital part of your creative instrument—your body, your nervous system, your emotional landscape. I share why repressing fear—whether you're an actor, singer, dancer, public speaker, or athlete—actually cuts you off from your authenticity, your instincts, and ultimately, your freedom as a creator. Fear is not a sign that you're broken. It’s a sign that you’re alive and sensitive, and those are the very things that make your art magnetic.
I share a personal story about witnessing a child being shamed for his fear—and how that moment mirrors what so many of us experienced growing up. We were told to "stop crying," "toughen up," and "be like someone else." And now, as adults, we’re still trying to be "good" or "enough" by silencing our natural emotions. But this emotional repression creates a kind of inner prison. We wear masks. We perform instead of embody. We show up disconnected from the raw energy that makes performance powerful.
This blog isn’t about tips and tricks to eliminate fear. It's about redefining your relationship with it. It's about creating the safety you never had to allow the fear to exist, to move, to teach you something, and then—when it's ready—to release.
Watch my training below to hear all my thoughts on this topic.
