How people pleasing is damaging your acting!

When you get an audition or work on set, you may have caught yourself trying to do it “well”; honor the writing; satisfy and please the casting director, director, producer, your agent and even other actors, especially if there are big actors next to you. You may want to make sure they like you. Even in life, you may have tried to satisfy your partner and friends.

The reason why this happens to you is because we all have been raised to be “good”, likable and to modify our emotions, behavior, speech and even thoughts so that it would work for others. We haven’t been educated to be our true and authentic selves, but to please others.

However, when you watch my training below you will discover that as an artist, trying to please others does not work because your art is about you, your own perspective, uniqueness, opinions and emotions about some topic. And you may have tried more acting classes, stronger choices, not to worry about what they will think or to learn your lines so well that you can be free and stop thinking about the text. And yet, it may not be working for you since during your whole life you have been conditioned, trained and reinforced to please.

And when you try to please others, your energy is outside of yourself. Therefore, you cannot be present, free, authentic and instinctive because you are not there. You are busy manipulating the outcome so that the audience, casting director, director, etc., may like you. You are not honoring your character and story. You are doing the opposite of your job description and of what can be fulfilling to you.

The work to do to be at the service of art is to undo your conditioning that forces you into trying to please so you can recover your voice, freedom and authenticity. That’s the only way the audience can be moved and the casting director can get interested in your tape or in person audition.

Watch the training below to hear all my thoughts on this topic.

After you watch the training, I'd love for you to join in the conversation happening in our private Facebook Group THE INSTINCTIVE ACTORS' SOCIETY.
