If you’re thinking about how to do a scene, or the right way to do it in order to be good, you’re not really listening to what’s happening in the moment. You’re not present with your character or the other actor. Therefore your performance is limited to the pre-conceived idea that you gave yourself about the scene.
It can be frustrating because you’re not alive and that means you’re probably not booking. If you do somehow book the job, you’re still not present when they call ACTION!. You won’t be called back over and over because you haven’t blown anyone away with your performance.
So often, I’ll see actors really TRY to listen. That doesn’t work either! You’re still being an actor who is working on their acting. You’re not listening as the character.
When you watch my training you'll discover that the actor's job is to BE the character. That character is listening. That character wants something in the scene. When you’re BEING the character, you want what they want and inevitably, you’re listening to the obstacle that’s in front of you.
The truth is that if you’re struggling to listen as an actor, your instrument is struggling because it’s not free. It’s so blocked and busy dealing with it’s ego and fears that it can’t BE. You’re not free to become a character because you’re preoccupied with your own actor-y stuff. Unlike, when your instrument is completely alive, it's fully available for the character. Which is what acting truly is.
