Is It Sometimes Painful When You Act?

As actors, you may feel afraid of forgetting your lines or not connecting with your character. You can also be so stressed before an audition that your instrument and voice close up, especially when you’re working with so much urgency around, under pressure or when you get a last-minute audition where you have to learn lots of lines and which is emotionally demanding. It may feel so much like an obligation that it doesn’t feel joyful, flowing, fun or free anymore.

You may also be affected by the competition and egos around you.

All this can definitely make your experience as an actor painful, which is radically opposite to what you wanted to live in your career. And to avoid that, you might have tried many methods, techniques, mentors, books, international acting teachers and you may still feel the pain.

When you watch my training below you'll discover that the reason why you’re experiencing so much pain is not because there’s something wrong with you, you didn’t attend the “right” class or you didn’t study enough. You're completely perfect. But you have been raised by your parents, school and society to behave and think like others, to feel a certain type of emotions, to do things “right”, to be a “good” actor;, so you can please, fit in and be loved by others. And if you didn’t feel, behave or think the way they wanted, you got punished or the love was pulled back. So you became what people wanted you to become.

But when you do that in art, it doesn’t work. When you’re trying to please as an actor; you’re trying to sell yourself, manipulate how the audience likes you and book. This disconnects you from yourself, from your truth, freedom and instinct. That’s why it’s painful for you. And if you’re not able to be yourself, there’s no way you can be there for your character. This is the opposite of what you're looking for and what casting directors and the audience are interested in, which is your capacity to be fully alive, free, truthful and in the moment.

What needs to be done is not for you to learn something new, but to unlearn your conditioning so you can go back to the free and true version of yourself.
