Why Auditions Are So Scary And What You Can Do About Them

Whenever you get an audition, you may feel a mix of excitement and tension, fear, doubt, and anxiety. As a consequence, the energy you invest in your work might not feel fulfilling. On the contrary, your auditions may drain all your energy. And the bigger the audition, the greater the pressure and fear.

This becomes problematic since auditioning is your gateway to work. As an actor, you're likely passionate, and landing the jobs you want is essential.

Therefore, to avoid that sensation of panic and to book more roles, you might have tried rehearsing extensively, taking more classes, and working harder. You might also think there's something wrong with you that needs fixing.

However, you may still feel that trying harder doesn't lead to better results or more fulfillment. This can lead to significant dissatisfaction and frustration. In fact, the harder you work, the tenser and more fearful you become in the audition room.

When you watch my training below you will discover that the reason you feel so scared during your auditions is that your education conditioned you to do things “right” and obey external authorities. The entire education system teaches compliance—to do what is deemed right to fit in and be liked by everyone. When you become an actor, this translates into trying to please the casting director and the director, memorizing your lines perfectly, and figuring out what they want. But there is no art in that approach. The moment you conform in this way, you give your power away. You become powerless. To be a true artist, you need to move away from what’s conventionally right and good.

Also, when you try to perform a scene “right” and look “good” in an audition, you bypass your authentic self and stop being present. In other words, you abandon your truth, freedom, unique perspective on the text, your feelings about it, and your character’s needs. Your job is to defend your character’s needs, not your ego’s.

YOU are the most crucial and irreplaceable ingredient in your artistic career. The only thing that truly matters when you audition is your ability to be authentically yourself in the moment—fully present, truthful, and free. When you get this, you show up to your audition focused on your character because you no longer need to worry about yourself.

After you watch the training, I'd love for you to join in the conversation happening in our private Facebook Group THE INSTINCTIVE ACTORS' SOCIETY.
