Afraid of not being liked when you audition?

As actors you may be worried about being liked or not by the director or casting director when you audition or perform. You may be concerned about your looks, your choices, your energy, your tension, etc. But when you do that, you’re not really being the character and you might try to calm your worry down so, inevitably, they can’t see you. That can be really challenging for you since you really want to book the part.

In order to make sure that you don’t worry about this anymore and that you’re able to show up present, you may have tried a lot of acting and audition classes. However, there isn’t any method or technique that will make you show up as the full version of yourself.

When you watch my training below you will discover that what’s really happening is that you have been raised in a culture where you’re expected to think, feel and behave a certain way. And when you don’t do this, there are consequences: you get punished, humiliated or ashamed. On the contrary, when you do what you’re told; you get validated, you fit in and you’re liked. That conditioning is imprinted in your wiring. Therefore, as an adult, when you get an audition, you try to be “good”, do it “right” and please them to make sure they like you and you book the job because that’s an automated system for you. .

However, being an artist is about being the free, instinctive and truthful version of yourself and doing things your unique way. Art exists to remind us of what humanity truly is: its beauty, singularity and uniqueness of each and every one of us. More specifically, being an actor has to do with opening up your instrument so you can be available for your character to defend what their story is about. All this goes directly against all that conditioning that makes you want to be liked by others. The second you try to be liked, you walk away from yourself, from your heart, truth, freedom and presence. And when you’re not present in your audition, your self tape or on set; you can’t be seen because you’re no longer there. Therefore, you can’t book.

The work to do is to undo all that conditioning so you can go back to the full and unique version of yourself. Then, you will be able to fight for your character’s needs. You will stand out because there is no one like you.
