How to Access Deep Emotions

As an actor, you may fear accessing your deep, intense emotions. Maybe it shows up when you’re preparing for an audition or a big scene that demands despair, rage, or anxiety. And if it’s for a huge opportunity—a major role or a project that could change your life—that fear may only get louder. You might already know this cycle. The bigger the stakes, the more your fear grows, and that fear tightens you up.

It makes you doubt yourself and your ability to connect with those emotions. Before you even start, you might think that it’s going to be hard. And if you’re on set, the idea of doing it over and over—20 takes of raw emotion—might feel impossible. That resistance makes everything harder.

The truth is, you didn’t wake up one day and decide it would be this way. When you watch my training below you will discover that you were conditioned to disconnect from your emotions. Growing up, you were told not to cry, not to yell, not to feel too much of anything. You learned to behave, to fit in, and to survive by shutting parts of yourself down. Over time, that conditioning became a mask—a polished version of you designed to be safe, likable, and acceptable.

Now, when you’re asked to step into a character’s raw humanity, that mask gets in the way. You have to push through it, and that’s exhausting. You might even fake it, but you know it’s not flowing. It’s not instinctive. It’s not effortless. And worst of all, it’s not fun.

Here’s what you need to know: the solution isn’t another acting class or method. Those will only strengthen your mask. The real work is unlearning. It’s about undoing the conditioning that’s blocking your emotional access. When you strip that away, you can reconnect with your true self—the part of you that feels deeply and instinctively, just like you did as a child.

When you melt that conditioning, your instrument becomes free. You stop worrying about “getting it right” or pleasing your ego, and instead, you can fully defend your character’s needs. Your emotions flow naturally, no matter how many takes the scene requires.
