Are you unable to reach deep sadness take after take?

Do you fall back on "tricks" to fake sadness?

For many actors, the hardest thing to do is to express sadness authentically and cry, take after take.

Maybe you can relate to some of these things I commonly hear:

  • Deep sadness is the hardest thing to do.

  • You can do it for 1 or 2 takes, but then it becomes excruciating.

  • You feel you need to push it, and once you do, you are no longer being authentic.

  • You sometimes use tricks to make it happen, but you hate how the results feel.

  • You are so sucked into the feeling of obligation and producing the desired result that it tightens your instrument, and you can’t connect to your sadness at all.

I understand that the general conclusion among actors is that reaching deep and authentic sadness repeatedly is hard... because it's simply hard to do.

But that is NOT the way I approach it.

When you watch my free training, you’ll discover that...

  1. Being sad, upset or crying is not considered a good thing in our culture; in fact, it's something you have been programmed to avoid, and as quickly as possible.

  2. As an actor, this learned negation of what you're feeling will show up. You are being asked to cry in a scene, but you've never really been allowed to feel the fullness of that sensation, let alone swim around in it and play with it..

  3. Sadness is actually beautiful and an integral part of the human experience. If you start doing the work of unlearning the cultural programming and let go of how you think you should be behaving, you will be able to tap into unlimited sadness (and so many more deep emotions).
