Afraid Of Not Remembering Your Lines?

You may be afraid of not remembering your lines. That can be pretty annoying since you may spend a lot of time learning them to make sure you do not forget them. In other words, after so much effort, you want to make sure that you do not make any mistakes. You do not want to forget them in your self tapes or auditions because that could block the scene and prevent you from continuing.

However, knowing your lines is one thing and being afraid of not remembering them is a very different thing. When you feel that fear, a lot of the energy of your preparation is spent just on your lines. You just focus on repeating words over and over again. If most of your energy is put on avoiding a fear of making a mistake, that means you are not being very creative in your process.

When you watch my training below you will discover that the reason why this happens is because you have been raised in traditional education where you are conditioning to not make mistakes. You are supposed to not make any mistakes and to learn by heart what you are told. Actually, mistakes are seen as wrong and bad at school. If you make them, you can be punished, humiliated or not validated.

Because of this conditioning, when you work as an actor, the ego part of you focuses on learning those lines to make sure that your ego does not get hurt. But, nothing can come out of your ego.

As an artist, you need to put your energy in your character’s needs, not in your ego’s needs. You need to focus on what you as the character want to achieve in a scene and what you do and say to get there. Once you are in character, there are no lines to remember at all. They are just words to get what you need from the other characters.

Therefore, the work to do is to undo that conditioning so that your ego does not manage your life and career. Once your ego is taken care of, you can show up as the character. You do not have to learn lines anymore. You devote yourself to your character’s needs. Then, what happens is you actually know the lines pretty quickly.
