I know this question can trigger a lot of artists in general, not just actors.
Your mind may instantly travel to thoughts of legitimacy and self worth. I hear a lot of actors say, “If I can’t make a living from it, if I’m not making X amount of dollars each year, I’m not legit.“ And these doubts can be reinforced by the negative opinions of family and friends who probably mean well but are struggling to understand your “non-traditional” career.
The industry is very competitive, so the reality is that there are a lot of actors who don’t yet make a living from acting. When deep down inside, you don’t consider yourself a professional because you’re still working a side hustle or chasing a breakout role, you can easily downward spiral.
You want to be a pro actor, and when people ask you what you do for a living, that’s what you answer, but… it’s not what you experience internally because you don’t live that way you think you should..
