Do You Feel Anxiety And Fear Before An Audition?

You may feel a lot of fear and anxiety before an audition, especially when the project or the director is really big. You might have studied acting for so long, attended so many workshops, and rehearsed extensively for your audition, feeling great about your preparation. However, as soon as you enter the audition room, you may feel that your instrument shrinks. Fear controls you, and you're not able to access all your talent.

This can be really frustrating since part of your job is to show up completely open at an audition and deliver your best, incredible self in order to defend a character and a story.

You may have experienced this often, which is problematic as it becomes ingrained in your nervous system. Then, you go to the next audition with more and more fear and anxiety accumulating because you're afraid it’s going to happen again. This energy prevents you from booking roles.

To improve your auditions, you may have considered taking more classes, attending more workshops, or reading more books. Yet, when another opportunity arises, your instrument locks up.

However, when you watch my training below you will discover that your fear and anxiety provide valuable information for you as an artist. They indicate that whatever you’re doing isn't working. There’s no point in trying to continue without making changes.

Firstly, you need to examine that fear and anxiety to understand what’s happening FOR you. You might discover fears such as they won’t like you, you'll forget your lines, you won’t deliver the necessary emotion, you won’t perform correctly, you'll make mistakes, or you won't book the role.

Secondly, you need to reconsider why you decided to become an actor. If your motivation is to satisfy your ego and receive external validation and love, you'll be trapped in an endless loop. You will never find the fulfillment you seek, as this is not what art is about. In reality, your job as an actor is to move beyond your ego, bringing your pure aliveness and truth to defend the character's needs, not your ego’s.

The problem is that you have no access to what is beneath your ego because you've been conditioned not to be in your truth. You've been trained out of your authentic feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, but never to cultivate your freedom and authenticity. The only thing you have access to is your conditioned self and learned behaviors that told you to be “good”, to feel, think, and behave in a certain way.

The work you can do as an artist is to become aware of that conditioning, work through it, and undo it so you can return to your freedom and truth. Only then will you be able to show up at your auditions completely open, free, truthful, and alive.
