As actors, you may get an audition for a character you feel uncomfortable with artistically. You may feel you are not aligned with the character, that the character is too far from you or that you do not want to defend it because you do not like it. You may also think that their story should not be out there or that they are wrong for the world. In conclusion, there are many reasons why you may feel you are not comfortable with this.
At the same time, this can be a job opportunity for you since you definitely want to work. You may also want to satisfy your agent and show up for the casting director. However,when you do this, part of you does it just to please others. Therefore, your heart and art might not be in it and you may feel unfulfilled. And you may have considered forcing yourself to do it in order not to refuse work or lose the opportunity. To sum up, you may have mixed feelings about doing it.
When you watch my training below you will discover that the invitation is to get super creative with a role you do not resonate with in the way it is written and described since there is plenty of room for your creativity. When you work on a character that is written brilliantly, all you can do is to submit to the writing and therefore there is not much space for you to create and bring your special juice. But when it is not written that amazingly, you have all the room to come and propose something that resonates with you. It is a perfect opportunity to fill in the gaps and get highly creative. At the end of the day, you are the artist who is responsible to defend your character. And it is your own, unique take on the character that will draw the director or casting director’s attention.
This will not guarantee that you book the role, but this is not the point. The point is that you will be able to bring your integrity, freedom and authenticity to a character you did not resonate with in the beginning and this will make you feel completely fulfilled as an artist.
